Edge

Usability test for Edge Wallet on 06/07/2021, using an iPhone SE 2016, iOS 14.6.

With every usability test, I do not use or search for the wallet’s how-to guides. I aim to figure out everything I need within the platform.

My first approach is to try using the FIO service (requests and send) in the wallet app immediately and see if the wallet can direct me to the right places to get started with those features.

Summary:

  • No notification or alert of incoming FIO requests.

  • Pending sent requests not shown in wallet transaction history, only shown under FIO Requests.

  • FIO Address called different things in Edge - At times referred to as Address, at other times as Name, other times as Domain.

  • Confusion on paying for FIO address vs creating a Free FIO address. The distinction between the two options is not clear enough.

  • FIO Request button on the Request page appears as another page tab, rather than its actual function as a ‘next button’.

Registering a FIO Address:

Edge wallet guides users to creating a FIO address when attempting to request crypto, by directing users to side menu. FIO addresses have different names on the app: “FIO Address”, “FIO Name” – Could cause confusion in instruction. During the process of registering a FIO address, I was confused on how to create a free FIO address as I was led to a page to pay for a FIO address.

Potential Issues:

1. “Register a Free Address” button is overshadowed by the “Next” button that appears after filling out the form:

  • As there was no “next” button in the initial stages of registering a FIO address, it became a bit confusing when I ended up on a page where I had to pay for a FIO address.

  • Just seeing a single button: “Register Free FIO Address” in the beginning, told me that ‘free’ was the only option available. Clicking on ‘next’ after typing my desired address name led me to a non-free option and confused.

Suggestion:

  • Have the “next” button show up on the first page of “Register FIO Address”.

2. FIO Addresses are called different things in Edge Wallet:

  • Alert says “FIO Addresses”, however, the side menu says “FIO Names”. Can be confusing for users when trying to find where to go in the side menu.

  • “FIO Names” category consists of “FIO Addresses” and “FIO Domains”.

  • Question remains of name change to Crypto Handle – Should it be “@edge Crypto Handles” and “FIO Crypto Handles”?

Mapping Crypto to FIO Address:

Very easy process.

Potential Issues:

1. Wasn’t notified that mapping crypto to FIO Address was the necessary next step.

After creating a FIO Address, I intuitively went back to the side menu and clicked on “FIO Names”, to see if my address was successfully created. I clicked on the address out of curiosity, and saw that addresses needed to be mapped to crypto.

It’s possible that a new user may have skipped this step.

2. Is it useful to have users manually map crypto to their address?

I’m not sure what the value is to having users manually map crypto to their address. Can this be done by the wallet app automatically without input from the user? Can all tokens be mapped by default, then users have the option to un-map certain cryptos from their address?

Sending FIO Requests:

Easy process, but the request page could be significantly improved.

Potential Issues:

1. Request Page a bit Confusing:

2. Pending Sent Requests not shown in Transaction History:

Accepting FIO Requests:

Easy process, but no alert/notification for incoming requests.

Potential Issues:

1. No notification or alert of incoming request:

Suggestion example:

Suggestion:

  • Have a notification icon on the side menu tab and on FIO Requests.

  • Would also be nice to have a banner alert while requests come during in-app use.

  • Have incoming FIO requests as part of Edge’s mobile push notifications.

2. Transaction details should say FIO Address as well as the crypto address:

The recipient Address should not only have the ETH address, but also the recipient’s FIO address, as the user is sending a request using FIO. The highlighted box should also say “emilym@guarda”.

The point of FIO is that users don’t have to remember long addresses. Not showing the FIO address in the transaction details forces users to use long addresses to verify that they sent their transaction to the right place.

Sending Funds with FIO Address:

Easy process and works as expected.
